FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

HOW DO YOU COMPETE?

Riders try out at the beginning of the year and are placed in one of two categories: Competing and General Members.

Competing members are expected to attend at least one practice and one team workout which doubles as a team meeting each week. Competing members are eligible to be chosen to horse show, although the roster can change between shows as we are only allowed fourteen rides per show.

General Members do not actively practice with the team but may attend team workouts, bonding activities, and travel with the team to meets. General members can also earn a chance to move up to a competing spot the following academic year if they display a strong work ethic and team spirit.

HOW DO I JOIN?

Tryouts will be held at the beginning of each fall semester after UA's Get On Board Day, an involvement fair hosted by The Source that provides an opportunity for students to learn about more than 600 student organization options available to them. Our club will have a table there where prospective members can join our GroupMe for updates about when and where tryouts will be held. We will also release tryout information on our social media platforms linked on the top right corner of this webpage.

DO I NEED MY OWN HORSE TO BE A PART OF THE TEAM?

Not at all! Several members do have their own horses outside of the team and can of course compete on their own, but horses are provided for all team practices and IHSA shows.

WHAT IS THE FINANCIAL COMMITMENT?

Each rider pays a small fee to our governing body, IHSA, at the beginning of each academic year in order to be eligible to compete. Members will be responsible for the cost of team practices at Westminster Farm/FTF Equestrian and all travel expenses including gas and hotels.
